Hello and welcome to Dream Machines Interviews, an online depository for interviews from my book Dream Machines: Electronic Music in Britain from Doctor Who to Acid House.

I did well over a hundred interviews with significant figures in UK electronic music for the book. A lot of that material couldn’t fit into Dream Machines, and there were lots of good quotes and anecdotes left over that could possibly be of interest to readers, journalists and researchers

That’s why I decided to start this site as a free resource, and I’ll be publishing a couple of raw Q&A interviews from the book each week. The interviewees will include Radiophonic pioneers and psychedelic veterans, industrial adventurers and electro-punks, dub scientists and housemasters. First up are Chris & Cosey and Dennis Bovell - I hope you’ll enjoy what they’ve got to say.

Stephen Morris was always much more than the drummer in Joy Division and New Order; he played a key role in the sonic experimentation that made both bands so special.  In this interview, he talks about Joy Division’s tinkering with electronics and how Factory Records producer Martin Hannett’s use of the studio as creative instrument often baffled the band, and how happy accidents with drum machines and synths created some of New Order’s most memorable moments. Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy: Interview

Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy have been making psychedelic music for more than five decades. They first played together on Gong’s delightfully deranged album You in 1973, collaborated on one of the keynote statements of early ambient music with Rainbow Dome Musick in 1979, and in more recent years they ’ ve been making fine techno recordings as System 7. In this interview, they talk about how they met, the trippy realities of life with the Gong collective, Giraudy’s experience of being one of the very few women synthesizer players in 1970s progressive rock, how they got involved in the acid house scene, and Hillage’s elucidation of the decades-long “quest for the psychedelic experience in music”. Don Letts: Interview

D on Letts is the film-maker who documented punk rock as it happened, and was the highly influential DJ at the Roxy club in London in 1977, where he schooled young punks in reggae grooves. He has also played a significant part in UK electronic music history as the samples man for Big Audio Dynamite, the band formed by Mick Jones after he was ousted from The Clash. The inimitable humour of the self-styled ‘rebel dread’ shines through here as he talks about Big Audio Dynamite ’s hybrid multicultural sound,  getting away with sonic larceny and why he had to put stickers all over his keyboards when playing live with the band. Back in the mid-eighties when you started , Big Audio Dynamite looked like a gang of  swashbuckling, stylish,  righteous dudes who knew all the best tunes.
